5th Grade, Activity 70: Understand the Place Value System
Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place (Place Value System).
Possible Decimals
- Group: Whole Class
- Materials: Possible Decimals cards, paper, and pencil
Display a Possible Decimal card, one at a time. Instruct students to write a decimal that could have been used to round the displayed decimal to the indicated place. Invite volunteers to the board after displaying each card for them to write possible decimals that are rounded to the displayed decimal. For example, the decimals below are possible decimals that can be rounded to 3.76.
- EX: What decimal can you write to the thousandths place that rounds to 3.76?
- Possible answers: 3.758, 3.762, 3.761
