Measurement Sort

  • Group: Three
  • Materials: Measurement Sort cards, Measurement Sort sheet

Give each student a Measurement Sort sheet and give each group a set of the Measurement Sort cards. Have students shuffle the cards and place them face down in a stack. Give the following instructions one at a time, giving students time to complete each directive:

  • Place the Customary and Metric header cards at the top of the work area.
  • Take turns drawing a card, one at a time. Place the card beneath the correct header card to identify the appropriate system of measurement.
  • After all cards have been placed under a header, have students write the metric and customary units on the Measurement Sort sheet in greatest to least order under the appropriate category.
  • Informally quiz students on the units of measure in each system.

Have students tell what is common about the metric measures. [the prefixes; milli-, kilo-, etc.]
