Understand a fraction 1/b, with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8, as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b(Understand Fractions as Numbers).
Represent the Models
- Group: Whole Class/Alone
- Materials: Represent the Models sheet
Issue a Represent the Models sheet to each student. Instruct students to complete the number bonds to represent the quantity shaded that is equal to one whole in each representation. Review students’ answers in a group discussion(Understand Fractions as Numbers). Have volunteers model the examples on the board.
