Description
Rounding Decimals
Group: Whole Class
Materials: Rounding Decimals cards
Issue a card to one student at a time. Call on a student with a card to write the rounded decimal on the board. The student also writes the other decimals on the board that are on their card that could have been used to round the displayed decimal to the place indicated. This student calls on another student to choose the decimal that has been
correctly rounded to the specified place. This chosen student must explain why they chose the rounded decimal as their answer.
Instructional Tip: Encourage clear justification of choices. As students explain why they chose the rounded decimal, they are prompted to focus on the specific digit influencing the rounding decision. Ask guiding questions like, “Which digit did you look at to decide how to round?” or “What happens when the digit to the right is 5 or higher?” This helps students understand how place value affects rounding and ensures they are confident in their explanations. Encourage peer feedback to foster collaborative learning, allowing students to discuss different decimals and justify their choices. This approach reinforces the logic behind rounding and enhances critical thinking.
