4th Grade, Activity 386: Solve Problems Involving Measurement and Conversion of Measurements from a Larger Unit to a Smaller Unit

Apply the area and perimeter formulas(Measure Problem Solving) for rectangles in real-world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.

Tri-Color Areas

  • Group: Pairs
  • Materials: Tri-Color Areas sheet, map pencils

Issue a Tri-Color Areas sheet and map pencils to each student. Discuss how students can use the squares to find the specified areas. Instruct students to use three different map colors to make a three-color design according to the specifications given. Discuss students’ solutions and strategies as a class.
